IRIS, Jiangsu/Sha-Steel stands for Institute of Research of Iron and Steel, Jiangsu Province and Sha-Steel, Co.,Ltd. (hereafter abbreviated as IRIS). IRIS was co-founded recently by Jiangsu Province and Shagang (Sha-Steel) of People's Republic of China for the technological development of Sha-Steel and the steel industry in Jiangsu province. IRIS is an independent organization, but financial support comes mostly from Sha-Steel and partly from Jiangsu provincial government.

             Sha-Steel is the largest private integrated steel company in China. Sha-Steel has rapidly expanded its output in
          the last 8 years, producing about 15 million tons of crude steel and 13 million tons of steel products(long products
       50%, flat products 50%) in 2006, and is ranked No.4 in China.

In line with the policy of the Central Government, Sha-Steel decided to cooperate with Jiangsu provincial government to
further its move toward advanced steel production by launching IRIS in Feb., 2007. Sha-Steel and Jiangsu Government
are firmly determined to make IRIS a world class research institute in developing high grade advanced steel materials with
leading edge processes.

Substantial investments have been made to build new buildings and install top notch equipment for melting, casting, rolling,
testing, analyzing and characterizing specimens as mentioned in the following sections. Top class researchers, senior
researchers and research group managers are now invited to join IRIS from all over the world to form IRIS which consists
of 11 research groups with about 500 members in 5 years.
